The Power of Your Own Energy
Updated: 5 days ago

How do you know what your own energy feels like?
You may recognize it through your breathing, posture, emotions, thoughts and level of vitality. You may feel open and expressive in one moment, quiet and inward in another. Sometimes your energy feels grounded and flowing; at other times, it may feel depleted, scattered, guarded or overwhelmed.
These changes are part of being human. Learning to notice them without judgment is an important part of energy awareness.
How Your Energy Affects Your Presence
Have you noticed that people sometimes respond to you differently depending on how you are feeling?
When you feel engaged, inspired and connected with yourself, you may speak more freely, make more eye contact and appear more available for connection. When you are grieving, anxious, exhausted or emotionally overwhelmed, you may naturally become quieter or more protective of your space.
People may respond to these visible and subtle signals, even when nothing has been spoken. Animals may notice them too. They often respond to changes in our movement, voice, attention and emotional presence.
This does not mean you must always appear positive so that others will be drawn to you. Your sadness, vulnerability and need for solitude deserve to be honored. Energy awareness is not about performing happiness. It is about recognizing what you are experiencing and choosing how you want to care for yourself within it.
Your Energy and the Occurring World
In Landmark terminology, the “occurring world” refers to the way life appears to us through our interpretations, experiences and internal state.
Two people can encounter the same situation and experience it very differently. Even our own view of a situation can change when we are rested, supported and grounded instead of frightened, depleted or overwhelmed.
When your internal state changes, the world around you may seem to change as well. You may recognize possibilities that you could not see before, communicate differently or become more willing to receive support.
The people around you do not necessarily need to change for you to begin having a different experience. Sometimes changing how you relate to your thoughts, emotions and energy opens an entirely new way of participating in your life.
Honoring Your Energy Before Trying to Change It
It is important to distinguish between energy that can be gently redirected and emotions that need to be felt, understood or supported.
A temporary sense of restlessness may shift through breathing, walking, music or movement. Deep grief, trauma, anger or depression may require more time and compassionate support. These experiences should not be treated as failures of intention or signs that you are vibrating incorrectly.
You cannot always will difficult feelings away—and you should not have to.
Sometimes the most powerful use of your energy is allowing yourself to acknowledge what is true. You can listen to the sadness, rest with the exhaustion or seek support for what feels too heavy to carry alone.
Personal power includes knowing when to generate movement and when to remain still.
Working With the Elements
Many spiritual, yogic and energy-healing traditions use the elements as symbols for different qualities within us. You can work with these qualities through meditation and visualization.
Earth: Grounding
Imagine yourself connected to the earth beneath you. Feel the support of the chair, floor or ground. Allow your breathing to settle and notice the physical weight of your body.
Earth energy can remind you of stability, presence and belonging.
Fire: Vitality
Visualize a warm light within your belly or heart. Imagine it becoming brighter with each comfortable breath—not as a force that overwhelms you, but as a steady source of courage, creativity and motivation.
Fire can represent transformation, passion and your willingness to act.
Water: Softening
Imagine cool, gentle water flowing through areas that feel tense or emotionally congested. Allow yourself to soften without demanding that anything disappear.
Water can symbolize emotion, receptivity, adaptability and release.
Air: Movement and Clarity
Bring attention to your breath. Notice the air entering and leaving your body. Imagine creating more space around thoughts or feelings that have seemed crowded.
Air can represent communication, perspective, movement and possibility.
You may also include spirit as the energy connecting these elements with your intuition, heart and relationship with something greater than yourself.
Practices for Shifting Your Energy
Your energy may respond to simple, intentional practices such as:
Conscious breathing
Meditation
Walking in nature
Grounding through your feet
Gentle yoga or Qigong
Shaking or intuitive movement
Sound, humming or mantra
Journaling
Reiki and energy healing
Rest and nourishing food
Expressing an emotion that needs acknowledgment
Connecting with someone who feels safe and supportive
The goal is not to force yourself into a “higher vibration.” It is to become more present, create movement where movement is possible and offer care to the places that need time.
Intention and Personal Power
Intention can be powerful. What you focus on influences your choices, attention and willingness to take action.
However, personal power is not the same as controlling every emotion or circumstance. It means developing a conscious relationship with your energy. You learn to recognize what belongs to you, what may have been influenced by your surroundings and what needs deeper healing.
As your self-awareness develops, you may become more able to choose how you speak, where you direct your attention and which environments or relationships support your well-being.
You become an active participant in your energy rather than feeling entirely controlled by it.
Becoming the Steward of Your Energy
Being the master of your own energy does not mean remaining cheerful, powerful or spiritually elevated at all times. It means becoming a compassionate steward of your internal world.
You can learn when to ground, when to move, when to express yourself and when to rest. You can strengthen your boundaries without closing your heart. You can invite greater flow while respecting the places within you that still need gentleness.
Your energy has power, but that power does not need to be forced. It can emerge through awareness, emotional honesty, embodiment and consistent spiritual practice.
